A Midwest-based dairy company has pulled thousands of gallons of milk due to worries that the containers could have been contaminated with chemicals from cleaning products.

As per Prairie Farms, based in Illinois, multiple batches of its fat-free milk, manufactured at its facility in Dubuque, Iowa, were discovered to include 'food-grade cleaning substances, which could lead to sickness if ingested.'

Food-safe cleaning products are intended for use on surfaces and machinery that directly interact with food during manufacturing, packing, or handling. Howeverthey are not safe for human consumption.

The 'food-safe' classification indicates that any residual amounts on a surface that has been thoroughly washed will not cause harm.

But consuming or ingesting them in concentrated form cancause chemical burnsin the mouth and throat, feeling sick, vomiting, and toxicity.

Around 320 gallons of milk were sold in totalIllinois and Wisconsin before the recallwas started on November 25.

The FDA's recall announcement stated that all remaining affected items have been taken off the shelves at retail locations.

Customers may search for the code date CEC08 and the plant code PLT19-145 to check if their milk was part of the affected batch.

The organization learned about possible contamination on November 24 and initiated a recall the following day.

As per a statement provided to the FDA: 'An inquiry was promptly launched, and following this review, the impacted items were taken off the shelves and a recall was commenced.'

Prairie Farms has not revealed how the milk got polluted. The affected gallons were manufactured during a short three-hour period.

No health issues linked to the recalled milk have been documented.

The company's statement said: 'Customers who bought the product with the dates mentioned above should not eat it; they can safely throw it away or take it back to the store for a refund.'

Cities in Illinois where milk was distributed are Bloomingdale, Buffalo Grove, Carpentersville, Lakemoor, North Aurora, and Rockford.

The following cities in Wisconsin include Appleton, Beloit, Green Bay, Janesville, Kenosha, Madison, Menomonee Falls, Oak Creek, Onalaska, Racine, Sun Prairie, and Waukesha.

In contemporary dairy facilities, automated processes utilize specific chemicals to sanitize the machinery during intervals between manufacturing cycles.

This kind of contamination is frequently linked to a significant breakdown in the procedure. Once the chemicals have been applied, the equipment is not thoroughly washed with clean water before milk production starts again, leading to minute amounts of acid finding their way into the end product.

This year, a significant food recall was launched affecting more than 200,000 pounds of liquid egg products.

The recall was initiated due to the possible existence of sodium hypochlorite, a cleaning agent based on bleach, within the products.

Consuming sodium hypochlorite, a strong disinfectant and bleaching agent containing chlorine, may lead to serious harm to tissues, such as intense inflammation, quick breakdown of red blood cells, ulcers, and possibly fatal outcomes, as reported by the CDC.

Although health authorities determined the risk to consumers was minimal, they recommended that the public discard or return the impacted items. No associated illnesses have been reported in relation to this event.

The impact on health from ingesting a food-safe cleaner would solely be determined by the quantity of the cleaning substance that got into that gallon of milk, which the company has not revealed.

Even minimal levels of pollution can lead to nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, as the substances irritate the gastrointestinal system.

High levels of chemicals in milk can lead to instant burning sensations in the mouth and throat. Signs of poisoning may involve intense stomach pain, anemia, imbalances in metabolism, and harm to the kidneys.

Prairie Farms has not yet responded to Healthy Survival's request for a statement.
