Trinity College Condemns Removal of Mother Tongue Policy

The chairperson, Board of Trustees, Trinity Group, Pastor Samuel Olatunji,Trinity Group of Schools, Ofada, Ogun State, has criticized the federal government's recent decision to stop using mother tongue as a language of teaching in schools, claiming that the policy does not tackle the actual problems affecting Nigeria's education system.

He gave remarks during an interview with The Nation at a press event organized at Trinity International College, Ofada, as part of the celebrations for the college's 30th anniversary.

In response to the FG's claim that numerous students are struggling with the English Language and thus need more rigorous English-only teaching, the Chairman stated that government officials are "addressing the wrong issue from the incorrect viewpoint."

He stated that the issue with students' low performance is not related to their native language.

Previously, when education was as it should be, when teachers were properly trained, when the government supplied resources, when the curriculum was outstanding, and when families were dedicated to learning, children performed well in English — even while speaking their native language," he claimed. Therefore, it is not the mother tongue that is causing children to struggle with English. The entire system has broken down.

He cautioned against measures that erode native languages, referring to these efforts as "killing our mother tongue," and called on the government to preserve cultural heritage while promoting English as Nigeria's official language.

The educator expressed concern about the standard of recent graduates, noting that many university students now have difficulty writing proper English.

"Primary school students in quality schools perform better than many graduates nowadays — not overstating it," he stated.

The difficulty with English is a problem across the entire education system. Everything has deteriorated.

He observed that kids can acquire several languages at once, arguing that the true answer is comprehensive educational reform, rather than restricting language use.

In discussing curriculum design, he highlighted the importance of having a well-outlined set of results at each level of education.

"What knowledge should a child possess in terms of intellect, emotions, personality, and business acumen? What skills, mindsets, and abilities should a child develop by the end of primary school, secondary school, or university?" he questioned.

He argued that the curriculum should mirror current realities and be guided by educators who are driven, adequately prepared, and held in high professional regard.

Referencing certain Western nations where honor is demanded, calling for a cultural transformation that reinstates respect for the teaching profession.

According to him, when educators receive training, support, recognition, and incentives, they will take pride in their profession and provide effective education.

In response to the Minister of Education's recent declaration that vocational training centers will now offer free education, he acknowledged it as a positive step but raised concerns about its long-term viability.

"It needs to surpass grammar and notifications. Are the facilities in good shape? Are the teachers skilled? What is the plan to make it effective?" he asked.

The Chairperson also emphasized Trinity International College's dedication to delivering top-notch education for families pursuing academic excellence and moral development.

"We are continuously reviewing our strategies, our methods, and our results. We aim to guarantee that our students—and every child who goes through this college—receives the highest quality education," he stated.

Previously, the Director of Education, Mrs. O.R. Adeyemo, gave a welcoming speech that emphasized the institution's 30-year history of academic excellence, Christian principles, and international accomplishments.

She highlighted various academic achievements, including: 2024/2025 ICAN FAME Southwest Championship. 4.0% of students achieved scores above 300 in the 2025 UTME. Exceptional IGCSE results — with students ranking top in Nigeria and top globally. SAT scores reaching up to 1580/1600. Champions of the 2025 Ogun State Road Safety Quiz and Debate and participants at World Science Olympiads in several regions around the world.

Adeyemo referred to the anniversary theme, “A Legacy of Excellence: 30 Years of Learning, Leadership, and Lifelong Connections,” as evidence of God's loyalty and the institution's dedication to cultivating global citizens grounded in solid ethical and Christian principles.

The Chairman ended by reiterating Trinity International College's dedication to offering top-notch education to families pursuing academic excellence and moral development.

"We are continuously reviewing our strategies, our methods, and our results. We aim to guarantee that our students — and every child who goes through this college — gets the highest quality education possible," he stated.

A week-long celebration marking the 30th anniversary is ongoing, featuring a range of activities culminating in a major Thanksgiving and Awards Service.
