IGN described him as 'exemplary,' while NPR noted that the actor portrayed both aspects of the complex character 'perfectly – the brooding, rebellious figure typical of many film noirs, along with the passionate speaker delivering powerful closing arguments to the jury.'
“Rhys skillfully reveals the mysterious character bit by bit, transforming this degenerate into a more familiar representation of the legal figure who has been admired for years,” AV Club added in its commendation.
Regrettably, even with a critically acclaimed and Emmy-nominated season, the series did not reach a third season.
