Podcasts Shaping Nigeria's Bravest Discussions

Over the past five years, a subtle transformation has occurred within Nigeria's entertainment sector. Starting as a modest form of media, it has developed into a significant cultural movement: podcasts now attract large audiences, drive online discussions, and impact how young Nigerians discuss topics such as love, politics, gender, religion, finance, and personal identity. These podcasts have expanded beyond casual chats; they serve as venues where Nigeria's changing culture and values are expressed in real time. In this article, Weekend Trust explores the most popular podcasts in Nigeria and examines what Nigerians think about these emerging platforms.

In modern Nigeria, podcasting has transitioned from a personal pastime into a dynamic hub for exchanging thoughts and discussions.

From authentic relationship tips to celebrity news and debates that spark Twitter disputes, certain programs are increasingly shaping online discussions, drawing in hundreds of thousands of viewers across different platforms and regularly giving rise to the next popular trend or meme.

I Said What I Said, commonly referred to as ISWIS, is recognized as one of Nigeria's biggest and most influential podcasts. It features in-depth discussions on pop culture, feminism, and relationship dynamics that often gain significant attention upon release. The podcast has a substantial presence on social media, with its official Instagram account boasting more than 100,000 followers. It can be accessed through Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. Hosted by Feyikemi Abudu and Jolaoluwa Ayeye, the duo has created a brand that consistently sells out live events and extends beyond audio content into live experiences and a global fanbase. FK, affectionately known by fans, is a Stanford-educated entrepreneur, former EndSARS activist, and former Time100 Next honoree who transitioned into media and business. Jola, also known as Jollz, is a screenwriter, media entrepreneur, and co-founder of creative initiatives and a book club named 'Happy Noisemaker'. While ISWIS episodes may not always generate conventional tabloid scandals, their conversations on politics, gender roles, and celebrity behavior have sparked online debates on X/Twitter, with replay clips going viral. The show's extended episodes and candid commentary have made it a go-to source for memorable quotes.

Next in line is The Honest Bunch. Previously hosted by Nedu, this podcast features in-depth, panel-style discussions on topics such as relationships, finance, and culture. The show is now hosted by Husband Material (Chukwudi Ezugwu), Ezinne Jane Ugorji, and Toun Cole (also known as Deity Cole). As of mid-2025, following some host-related issues, Daddy Freeze took over as co-host alongside Nedu. The hosts deliver spontaneous, comedic, and unscripted debates to their audience. Some celebrities have shared their honest opinions on The Honest Bunch, including Kunle Remi, Kanayo O, Kanayo, Blessing CEO, Omoyele Yele Sowore, and more. As one of the most discussed podcasts, The Honest Bunch has faced its share of controversies. In early 2025, Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede claimed that the podcast manipulated her interview clips, which she believed harmed her image and led to online harassment from fans. VDM also accused the podcast and Nedu of fabricating allegations and leaking private conversations about alleged romantic relationships. These claims eventually resulted in Nedu stepping down as the podcast's host.

Faith-related content is among the most popular forms of digital media in Nigeria, with Apostle Femi Lazarus leading the podcast landscape. In 2024, Spotify recognized him as Nigeria's most-streamed podcaster. Hosted by Femi Lazarus, who is the lead pastor of Light Nation, the podcast presents biblical teachings with a sense of urgency and emotional intensity. New episodes are released several times a week, varying in length from 18 minutes to over an hour. Having more than 100 episodes available across different platforms, the show has evolved into a digital revival center for listeners searching for clarity and spiritual comfort, featuring sermons on topics such as healing, identity, prayer, trauma, restoration, and personal development. Unlike other podcasts, this one has not generated any controversy, although episodes discussing 'pain', 'childhood trauma', and 'failed marriages' often lead to emotional conversations on social media. For many, the program addresses a void created by traditional church services, providing flexible spiritual guidance in a rapidly changing world.

Another podcast that many people enjoy is Toke Moments. Hosted by former OAP Toke Makinwa, the show covers discussions on relationships, analysis of pop culture, personal stories, and interviews with celebrities, all delivered with candid humor.

Toke channeled all her communication efforts into creating Toke Moments after leaving radio in 2022 to concentrate more on digital storytelling. The discussions cover a wide range of topics, including heartbreaks, life lessons, turning 40, broken friendships, dealing with fame, and financial mistakes. Notable guests include actors and public figures like Ini Edo, Funke Akindele, and Bobrisky, and the episodes often become popular for several days. Toke is known for speaking openly, sometimes sparking controversy, such as when she made a joke about "the secret spots wealthy men visit during Christmas," which led to online debates. These discussions boost the podcast's visibility and establish it as a platform where honest and challenging conversations are welcomed. With over a million listeners across different platforms, a 4.5/5 rating on Apple Podcasts, and a loyal fan base, the show thrives because it addresses the everyday challenges that young Nigerians encounter, such as ambition, relationships, identity, money, and personal transformation.

Another rising sensation is Bahd and Boujee, hosted by Tolanibaj and Moet Abebe. The program, which is popular among younger viewers, centers around humor, bold commentary, and sometimes intense discussions. Produced by Glitch Africa, the show often gains widespread attention because of its 'no holds barred' style. Both hosts are well-known media personalities who aren't afraid to spark debate online. They have quick wit and thick skin. In one notable episode, Tolanibaj alleged that men in power had tried to exchange sexual favors for opportunities with influencers, causing a big reaction on social media. She also received death threats from some of Wizkid's fans after expressing her views on him, highlighting how harsh celebrity opinions can be in today's online world. Co-host Moet has openly discussed the criticism they face, once stating that Nigerian audiences "aren't used to outspoken women." Nevertheless, the negative response hasn't hindered the podcast's growth. In fact, the controversy helps maintain high levels of interaction.

Finally, there's Tea With Tay, a much-loved podcast centered around conversations. The program is hosted by Taymesan Emmanuel, widely recognized as Tay. Its focus revolves around authenticity and interviews with prominent figures, creating a cozy, tea-drinking ambiance, as suggested by the title. The show regularly appears among the nation's leading lifestyle podcasts. Tay's charm comes from his skill in making guests feel at ease, encouraging them to reveal their most personal experiences, ranging from childhood challenges to artistic achievements, spirituality, celebrity status, emotional pain, and personal redemption. Guests feature actors, musicians, content creators, and ordinary Nigerians with compelling narratives. Episodes featuring BBN stars Bisola, Tacha, and TV host Frank Edoho have been especially well-received, offering listeners a mix of humor, insight, and genuine revelations. Unlike certain podcasts that rely on drama, Tea With Tay is recognized for its more gentle narrative style. It allows guests room to express themselves and is often described as therapy wrapped in entertainment.

What audiences believe about the rising podcast scene in Nigeria

With the ongoing expansion of podcasts throughout Nigeria's online environment, numerous listeners claim that the format offers more than just entertainment—it has evolved into a vital support system, providing solace and knowledge. Nevertheless, as the industry grows, audiences are becoming more concerned about what they refer to as the 'corruption' of podcasting, driven by exaggerated content and the pursuit of viral popularity.

Martha Ujunwa, an avid follower of ISWIS, mentioned that she enjoys the program due to its genuine approach and the energy brought by its guests. She stated, 'FK and Jollz discuss real life in a manner that seems truthful.'

"But the space has become noisy. Everyone now wants to launch a podcast after seeing a clip go viral. Some programs aren't based on respect for their audience; they rely on shock tactics. This undermines the efforts of dedicated podcasters," she said.

Another ISWIS listener, Chukwudi John, expressed a comparable worry, mentioning that podcasts allow him to take a break from the stresses of adult life, yet the sector's reputation is suffering. 'Many of these new programs use loud debates or fabricated confessions to attract listeners. 'It's as if the goal is now, 'How can I offend someone today to make it into the blogs?' For those of us who truly appreciate podcasting, it's disappointing.'

A big fan of Tea with Tay, Seun Adebayo, mentioned that he is attracted to the empathy shown by the program's host. 'He truly listens to his guests,' he stated.

Nevertheless, Seun believes that not everyone is suitable to join the podcast trend. He stated, 'Podcasting has been taken over by those seeking influence. Some individuals use microphones as tools of attack. They speak carelessly because they are aware that Nigerians enjoy drama, and this leads to repercussions.'

For those with a spiritual inclination, the matter is more significant. Samuel Uche, a devoted adherent of Apostle Femi Lazarus, feels that podcasting can serve as an effective tool for spiritual stability. Nonetheless, he thinks the medium's importance has started to decrease. 'Not all topics are meaningful. Many young podcasters speak without caution, occasionally even discussing holy matters. Podcasting should inspire and inform. Instead, some programs have transformed it into a field of verbal attacks.'

At the very least, it is evident from these responses that Nigerians have a strong affinity for podcasts, and they are actively engaging with them. It's not only about listening; they are embracing and shaping their lives around the discussions and viewpoints shared on these platforms. Nevertheless, they desire that future conversations become more responsible, educational, and thought-provoking as the industry develops.
