Senator Okey Ezea, who served as the representative for Enugu North District in the 10th Senate, is said to have passed away at a private hospital in Lagos State.

His son, Jideofor Ezea, stated that the senator died at approximately 11:07 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, following a short illness.

On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, in a statement, Jideofor mentioned, "With deep sorrow, the family of Honorable Senator Okey Ezea, who served Enugu North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate, announces his demise." He requested Nigerians to keep the family in their thoughts during "this challenging period."

Education background

Okey Ezea was born on August 11, 1963, in Itchi, within the Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State. He studied at Community Primary School in Umachi and later attended Nsukka High School.

He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1986. Subsequently, he pursued law at the University of Lagos, where he earned both an LL.B and an LL.M, and was acknowledged as the top graduate in his master's program.

He remained a doctoral student at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of Lagos, until his passing.

Early career

Following his completion of the National Youth Service Corps in September 1987, Okey Ezea became part of the Nigerian Customs Service, advancing to the position of Deputy Superintendent prior to his voluntary retirement in 1994.

He subsequently entered the business world, establishing Ideke Shipping Limited, which emerged as a key entity in Nigeria's oil and gas logistics industry.

The corporation collaborated with global companies like Shell, Chevron, Mobil, and NLNG. He also founded additional businesses, including Ideke Engineering Limited, Ideke Overseas Limited, Damik Ventures Limited, and Damik Security Limited.

Political journey

Okey Ezea's political journey started in 2007 when he ran for the position of governor in Enugu State as a candidate from the Labour Party, but he was unsuccessful.

In 2013, he helped establish the All Progressives Congress in Enugu and was selected as the party's candidate for governor in 2015. In 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari named him to lead the Governing Board of the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo, Taraba State, a role he maintained until 2022.

He rejoined the Labour Party in the same year and won the Enugu North senatorial seat during the 2023 general election, beating former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Student union politics

His involvement in politics began during his time at university. While studying at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, he was the Speaker of the Political Science Students’ Parliament in 1983/84, a member of the Students’ Union Government House of Representatives in 1984/85, a member of the SUG Senate in 1985, and the Welfare Officer of the SUG Executive Committee in 1984/85.

Labour party stand

His son mentioned that "Throughout his life, he was the sole federal representative from Enugu State elected under the Labour Party in 2023 who, based on his principles, never switched to the ruling party, resisting the pressure to abandon the party that supported his Senate campaign."

Ezea’s legacy

Senator Okey Ezea's life embodied strength, integrity, and commitment. His career, spanning from education to commerce and governance, was marked by perseverance and a strong focus on serving his people.

The passing of him signified the conclusion of a path that merged public service, business achievements, and political beliefs.
