Movember takes the lead in transforming the landscape of men's health

Movember 2025 is taking a strong stance with a powerful message aimed at transforming men's health.

The initiative started in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, when a group of friends began growing beards to promote awareness about men's health concerns.

What began as a local effort rapidly transformed into a worldwide movement that supports research, community projects, and health initiatives in over 20 countries. This year's theme is "Changing the face of men’s health." Learnmore Shoti from Cimas Health Group emphasized the importance of tackling the hidden challenges impacting men and called on communities to support awareness, prevention, and compassion.

"Men typically live shorter lives than women, and a significant portion of this gap is due to avoidable factors," Shoti explained.

He highlighted that men are less inclined to discuss their health, undergo screenings, or seek assistance early, which are all obstacles that Movember strives to eliminate. Shoti mentioned that in previous years, Movember concentrated more on awareness and visibility. However, in 2025, the focus is on changing behaviour, motivating men to not only understand the issues but also take action.

The campaign's three key areas—prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health—are particularly significant in Zimbabwe.

Local health statistics indicate that men tend to delay seeking medical care until their conditions have worsened. The average life expectancy for males is 63 years, whereas females live to an average of 68 years. Additionally, suicide rates are considerably higher among men, with 26.9 deaths per 100,000 individuals, compared to 9.7 for women.

Prostate cancer is still the most prevalent type of cancer among men in Zimbabwe. Shoti cautioned that early stages typically do not exhibit any symptoms, highlighting the importance of regular screenings. In later stages, symptoms might involve trouble urinating, a weak urine stream, or the presence of blood in urine or semen.

"Men who are 40 years old and older, particularly those with a family history, should talk to their physician about testing," he said.

Cancer of the testicles, which is more common in men between the ages of 15 and 40, can be identified at an early stage by performing monthly self-checks.

If something seems out of the ordinary, a quick ultrasound can offer reassurance. Early identification results in a survival rate of nearly 95%.

Mental well-being is central to Movember's goals. Worldwide, men make up roughly 75% of suicide fatalities, but numerous individuals never seek assistance.

"Movember supports initiatives that encourage emotional awareness, community engagement, and timely support. Positive mental well-being is just as important as physical health," Shoti emphasized.

He observed that men frequently display psychological discomfort in various ways. Indicators of depression or anxiety can involve anger, tiredness, isolation, or a decrease in enthusiasm for pastimes.

Men frequently display anger or tiredness instead of openly showing sadness," Shoti added. "Recognizing these subtle indicators can be life-saving.

Enhancing mental health doesn't necessarily involve major transformations. Shoti suggested maintaining steady routines like routine physical activity, adequate rest, reducing alcohol consumption, remaining engaged with social or spiritual communities, and reaching out for assistance at an early stage.

He also emphasized that taking care of mental health reflects courage, not frailty.

Cultural norms continue to pose a challenge. Numerous men are brought up to be robust and independent, which makes it hard for them to ask for assistance.

Shoti mentioned that he thinks this can be improved by making discussions about health more common, establishing healthcare environments that are suitable for men, and promoting support from families and employers.

The mustache, the hallmark of Movember, is essential in initiating conversations.

It serves as a visible representation of men's health throughout November. It encourages discussions... that lead to conversations about prostate exams, mental well-being, or the significance of routine medical check-ups.

Shoti added that Cimas Health Group is implementing concrete actions to aid Movember 2025.

We are conducting a one-month 'Men Matter' initiative throughout November. We are increasing awareness through prostate cancer presentations and screenings, mental health education, and fitness events like the Cimas iGo Half Marathon nationwide. Additionally, we are partnering with businesses to encourage men's health education.

Men from Zimbabwe have multiple avenues to engage. They can get involved by attending events aimed at promoting awareness regarding men's health.

This year, our Cimas iGo half marathon will take place on November 23 in Bulawayo, with the theme 'Champions of Empathy: Inspiring Healthier Communities.'

"Additional choices involve cultivating a mustache, participating in wellness check-ups, or contributing to men's health programs. Cimas counseling services are available to all individuals in need of mental health assistance," Shoti mentioned.

He continued by stating that families and partners are essential in aiding men's health.

"Partners can motivate men to schedule viewings, assist with lifestyle modifications, and establish secure environments for heartfelt discussions. A subtle reminder or a common health objective can be the push that prevents a tragedy," Shoti stated.

Workplaces also serve as important partners. Employers can organize discussions, fund film showings, and establish private areas for conversations about mental health.
