A supervisory organization tasked with maintaining standards in medical and dental education and practice in Nigeria, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), has given approval to the Federal Medical Centre in Ikole-Ekiti, Ekiti State, for housemanship training.
The certification would allow the healthcare institution to draw in high-caliber medical professionals, offer housemanship training to medical school graduates to acquire hands-on experience in their specialty.
The hospital received accreditation due to its advanced facilities, equipment, and technology, sufficient patient volume to offer a variety of learning opportunities, organized training programs that comply with MDCN's standards, training capability, a supportive training atmosphere, enough supervision and guidance from skilled medical experts, and efficient record-keeping and assessment systems to track progress, among other factors.
Following a detailed inspection of the hospital's facilities, the seven-member MDCN team, headed by its Deputy Registrar, Dr Nnaemeka Nwakanma, praised the swift progress made at the FMC, while encouraging its management and medical staff to maintain excellence as the institution strives to become a complete training center.
Nwakanma characterized FMC Ikole-Ekiti as an example of innovative excellence, highlighting that the hospital has already drawn a remarkable group of specialists even after its recent transition to tertiary status.
The Deputy Registrar praised the Medical Director, Professor Dare Ogunlusi, the consultants, and the management team for their commitment, noting that the achievements made in a brief time demonstrate effective leadership and shared goals.
He commended the hospital for positioning itself as "a draw for top specialists from Ekiti and nearby regions," urging the administration to maintain its approaches to continue drawing in medical professionals.
The specialist also emphasized the importance of upholding global standards in medical education, pointing out that Nigeria's medical training system currently holds significant international acclaim.
He stated, “There aren’t many hospitals operating at this level that uphold the cleanliness I witnessed at FMC Ikole-Ekiti. This reflects that the hospital has a culture of keeping its surroundings clean and peaceful. It doesn’t make sense for patients to come to the hospital and leave with infections acquired due to inadequate hygiene within the facility.”
But we have noticed that you have put in a good effort, and it doesn't seem like you did this today. It clearly looks like this all the time, and we highly commend it.
So, my team has just informed me to let you know that the Federal Medical Center Ikole-Ekiti is now recognized as a Housemanship Training Center.
In his reply, Medical Director Professor Ogunlusi conveyed sincere gratitude for the assistance the center has obtained, highlighting that many of its current initiatives are funded via internally generated revenue (IGR), reinforcing the hospital's dedication to providing high-quality medical care.
Ogunlusi highlighted that the well-being of staff and delivering care focused on patients continue to be the main concerns for the hospital. He stressed that FMC, Ikole-Ekiti upholds high levels of cleanliness and professionalism, ensuring that patients are treated with respect and honor.
He vowed that the Hospital would maintain the highest level of professional conduct in providing quality healthcare for the benefit of humanity.
Remember that the FMC Ikole-Ekiti came into existence via a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Ekiti State Government in July 2024; it was previously a state specialist hospital and has since been elevated to a Federal Medical Centre.
The health center provides a range of services including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Emergency Care, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Endocrinology, Ophthalmology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Joint Replacement, Gastroenterology, Dental Services, and more.
