Nintendo's image for unconventional choices, ranging from positive to negative, has kept growing following theSwitch 2Its launch. From the strange summer release date to the bafflingno updates on a new Super Mario game, everything has been exactly as strange as usual. Although all that seems perfectly reasonable and logical, compared to making Kirby Air Riders.
Although it was soon overlooked upon its release, Kirby Air Ride came out for the GameCube in 2003. It wasn't particularly well-received. In fact, when we were compiling a list of theworst reviewed Nintendo gamesof all time, after the release ofNintendo Switch 2 Introduction Guide, Kirby Air Ride nearly made it onto the list, boasting a Metacritic score of 61.
We've continuously reminded ourselves of that reality over the past few months, as Nintendo has launched an incredibly wide-ranging promotional effort for the sequel, which has somehow encompassedtwo one-hour long Nintendo Direct presentations. Why so much energy is being put into the game we don't understand, and the more we play it, the more puzzled we become.
Besides that, it's quite unusual that Kirby Air Riders is being released so early in the Switch 2's lifespan, consideringMario Kart Worldhas already released a high-profile, family-oriented racing game for the new platform. However, some fans believe that Nintendo is trying to win over director Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Kirby, in an effort to persuade him to develop a newSuper Smash Bros.game. According to his statement, everythingwasNintendo's concept, so who can say.
What we are aware of is that Kirby Air Ride was a concept with significant issues 22 years back and has not stood the test of time. Particularly since the three primary gameplay modes remain almost identical to what they were more than two decades ago, making this essentially a remake rather than a true sequel.
All the different modes utilize the same controls but operate in significantly different manners. The simplest one is Air Ride, which resembles traditional Mario Kart in appearance and gameplay, except there are always additional computer-controlled opponents on the track, along with the real competitors, which you can suck in and throw as projectiles or power-ups in the typical Kirby style.
