On Wednesday, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf submitted a budget plan worth N1.36 trillion for the 2026 financial year to the Kano State House of Assembly.
The financial plan was labeled "Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development".
Delivering the projections to legislators in Kano, the governor stated that the budget was crafted to reinforce existing changes, finish significant infrastructure projects, increase social programs, and maintain funding for education, healthcare, and the development of human resources.
Yusuf stated that the proposed budget includes N934.6bn (68%) allocated for capital outlay and N433.4bn (32%) for operational expenses, reflecting the administration's focus on long-term growth.
He mentioned that over 80 percent of his campaign pledges had already been completed, and noted that 2026 would concentrate mainly on finishing the Urban Renewal Project, increasing housing initiatives, and assisting small and medium enterprises within the AKK Gas Pipeline area.
The governor began his speech by expressing sympathy to the families of notable individuals from Kano who have passed away in recent months, such as business leader Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, Galadiman Kano Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, and experienced politician Alhaji Ahmadu Haruna Zago. He also expressed sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari and the 22 Kano athletes who lost their lives in a road accident in May.
Yusuf mentioned that the 2025 budget achieved 75% of its targets from January to October, showing notable advancements in critical areas.
The sector was allocated N280.6bn (31%) in 2025, with significant accomplishments such as extensive classroom refurbishments, free educational initiatives, coverage of NECO fees, scholarships, the creation of Gaya Polytechnic, hiring 400 Mathematics teachers and 1,600 security personnel, and upgrades to top secondary schools. He mentioned that these initiatives contributed to Kano securing the top position in Nigeria's 2025 NECO results.
The government allocated N149.7bn to the health sector, enhancing hospitals in various LGAs, broadening health coverage, introducing the Abba-Care Program, restoring infrastructure, and supplying equipment and energy solutions to key hospitals.
The government acquired 199,000 fertilizer bags, provided rice to families, authorized 11 small dams, and recruited additional extension staff.
Initiatives involved the expansion of urban roads, purchasing of transformers, installation of solar streetlights, restoration of mosques, and housing development projects throughout the state.
The government reactivated textile clusters across all 44 LGAs, renovated key markets, enhanced support for small and medium enterprises, and organized cultural events like KANFEST.
The government introduced its Climate Change Policy, cleared waterways, acquired waste management tools, and planted more than 5.5 million trees.
Yusuf mentioned that the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch had trained 2,000 individuals and supplied uniforms to 6,000 people as part of broader security initiatives.
More than 5,384 young people were helped through an N800m development program; thousands of women received assistance in the form of livestock; and small business owners received N50,000 grants.
The 2026 budget dedicates the highest portions to education, N405.3bn (30%); health, N212.2bn (16%), and infrastructure, N346.2bn (25%).
Other areas such as farming, safety, trade, water provision, environmental protection, and youth advancement also received substantial financial support.
Yusuf called on the assembly to quickly approve the bill, stating that the budget "symbolizes our agreement to build on achievements, enhance reforms, and protect Kano's future."
He thanked public officials, collaborators, MDAs, and locals for their support of the administration's reform initiative.
In response, Ismail Jibril Falgore, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, pledged the governor that the appropriation bill would be passed quickly.
