Donald TrumpHis hold on power has been weakened following a nearly unanimous decision to disclose the Epstein documents, which some think could signal the beginning of the end of his presidency as his control within his party weakens.
The Epstein Transparency Actpassed 427-1 in the House before the Senate approved it without opposition, marking an unexpected development that revealed the powerful bipartisan support for the measure. The legislation might reach Trump's desk as soon as today.
Trump has consistently declined to disclose records from the Department of Justice concerning Jeffrey Epstein, andunsuccessfully tried to prevent the bill from being passed.
That occurred even though he campaigned for a second term by pledging to make the documents public, aprimary worry for numerous individuals within his Make America Great Again supporterswho claimed the deceased sex offender maintained a "client list" of powerful men over whom he had incriminating information.
Pam Bondi, the state attorney general, retracted her statement in July, claiming that the list never existed and that the Department of Justice would not release any further information regarding the fallen financier. However, theEpstein issue has snowballed, revealing divisions within the Republican Party and even staunch MAGA supporters.
The vote occurred during a challenging period for Trump, coming after humiliating electoral defeats to the Democrats this month, leading to declining poll ratings and economic challenges.
Epstein exposes Trump’s weakness
The Epstein matter has highlighted uncommon disagreements within the Republican Party and the boundaries of Trump's influence over his party, which holds both chambers of Congress, and has remained compliant with policies advocated by the President.
Trump faced a humbling change of position over the release of the documents after it became evident he couldn't compel rebellious Republicans in the House of Representatives to withdraw their backing for the legislation.
Four Republican lawmakers in Congress, among them strong supporters of Trump, defied White House influence, including a series of personal criticisms from Trump, in order to sign the discharge petition that led to the vote.
"This conflict has demonstrated the maximum extent of Trump's ability to control the other branches of government, even though he has attempted to portray himself as having been okay with this result all along," said Dr. Adam Quinn, an associate professor of American and international politics at the University of Birmingham.
With the political climate becoming more challenging, driven by economic factors and other considerations, and with a Democratic majority in the House expected after next year's midterms, we might begin to discern the shape of the decline phase of Trump's presidency.
Nevertheless, he warned that Trump continued to hold significant influence within the Republican Party. "If he is to lose that control, there are still many stages to go through before that happens."
Bruce J Schulman, a history professor at Boston University, stated that the Epstein matter is a "unique, rare situation" making it challenging to determine if it might influence Trump's control within the party.
This is a very unique situation," he remarked, adding that "it's not finished yet — the congressional vote doesn't guarantee the documents will be made public, so there might be further disputes about it, or the documents could be released only to the House Oversight committee and not become available to the general public, or they might be released publicly with unknown details coming to light.
"Can Republicans go against Trump on other issues? That's difficult to determine," he further remarked.
Maga is fracturing
The Epstein controversy has deepened divisions within the Make America Great Again movement, with many members fixated on conspiracy theories involving influential child abusers. Even those not typically drawn to such theories are now convinced that the documents will expose damaging evidence against affluent elites connected to Epstein.
The group Trump established has not complied with his requests to disregard Epstein, and it seems to be pushing the President into giving in.
Trump's former loyal supporter and staunch MAGA advocate, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, has ended their relationship with him over Epstein, and was called a "traitor" for it. On Tuesday, she joined survivors of Epstein's abuse, condemning the President for obstructing transparency.
The Epstein matter has been one of the most damaging aspects for MAGA," she stated. "Seeing this actually become a conflict has divided MAGA. The only way to address the powerful, brave women behind me is by taking real action to release these documents, and the American public won't accept any more nonsense.
However, specialists have advised caution in anticipating the downfall of Trump's influence within the MAGA movement.
Trump's downfall has often been forecasted over the last decade," stated Dr. David Andersen, associate professor of American politics at Durham University. "He has endured more scandals, blunders, impeachments, and election losses than any other political leader in recent U.S. history and has consistently come out unharmed, maintaining a strong hold on the Republican Party.
He highlighted that a central characteristic of MAGA supporters is their immersion in an environment where pro-Trump perspectives are prevalent. "They mainly engage with Trump-supportive media, are isolated within Trump-friendly social platforms, and have surrounded themselves with like-minded friends. There is very little opportunity for negative information about Trump to reach them."
Maga remains faithful to all that the President embodies, and according to Andersen, Trump's approval numbers are unlikely to shift until his fundamental supporters start to leave him.
"It might be 'the beginning of the end' for Trump, but I believe we are still some way off from that," he added.
The Epstein documents – a conclusive evidence?
This may vary based on the contents of the Epstein documents, provided they are made public.
Despite the House vote, the White House maintained that the President would sign the bill into law, yet advisors were trying—without success—to alter the legislation in the Senate, as reported by Reuters.
Trump's hesitation has intensified the controversy. Trump, who associated with Epstein during the 1990s and 2000s, claimed he ended his relationship with the financier. Trump has never faced any allegations concerning Epstein, who took his own life while in custody in 2019.
Numerous people are questioning what could be so harmful that Trump is willing to jeopardize everything to prevent the documents from becoming public. His name is repeatedly mentioned in the unshared records.
Trump's public support has reached its lowest level this year, as reported by a poll released on Monday, due to the Epstein matter. According to the Reuters/Ipsos survey, 60 percent of Americans think the government is concealing details about Epstein's death, and 70 percent believe it is hiding information regarding individuals connected to his crimes. Just 44 percent of Republicans felt Trump was managing the Epstein situation effectively.
Nevertheless, if the material isn't completely unacceptable, it remains uncertain how much harm it will inflict on him. He has gained the moniker "Teflon Don" due to his skill in dismissing controversy, including paying off adult film actresses he had relationships with while married, making statements about sexually assaulting women, and encouraging his followers to storm the Capitol.
The disclosure of the documents might, potentially, cause Maga to oppose him – however, this would only occur if there is incriminating evidence that implicates Trump in some manner and his followers accept it, as stated by Andersen.
Although Trump might not be pleased with the information being disclosed, he is unlikely to suffer significant harm from it. His preference for young, attractive women and his tendency to spend extravagantly on a luxurious lifestyle is already well-known, and the MAGA supporters do not view this negatively; they see it as part of his character. Additional proof of this is unlikely to alter their opinions.
The economic situation poses a significant challenge for Trump.
The Epstein vote occurred just after Americans voted against the Republicans in this month's elections, as Democrats focused on affordability concerns in a slowing economy.
Trump is facing increasing pressure, as inflation rose to 3 percent in September, compared to 2.9 percent in August and 2.7 percent in July, after he introduced extensive tariffs in April.
A struggling economy and rising prices are noticeable in daily life... If these issues continue to deteriorate, it could cause the base to start distancing themselves from Trump, but this won't occur rapidly," said Andersen. "The greater threat to Trump is if the economy starts collapsing in ways he cannot conceal from the public, such as a stock market crash.
If the electorate opposes Trump in the upcoming mid-term elections next November, resulting in Congress being controlled by the Democrats,Trump might end up as a president with limited power..
Dr. Laura Smith, a specialist in American presidential history from Arizona State University, stated that next year's elections might serve as a "critical turning point for Trump's presidential influence."
Although Trump's power has been applied via executive actions and not constrained by a largely ineffective Congress, "the issue is whether this will remain the case."
