The Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB) has achieved a record number of participants in its national technical and vocational evaluations, with over 137,000 trainees taking the November-December 2025 exams throughout the nation.

In an interview with reporters at the UVTAB office in Kampala on November 22, Mr. Onesmus Oyesigye, the organization's Executive Secretary, mentioned that 137,546 applicants from 743 testing centers are involved in the process, which started with a meeting on November 21 and will continue until December 18.

Among the candidates, 80,654 are men and 56,892 are women, with 333 being students who require special education.

Mr. Oyesigye mentioned that UVTAB has assigned 150 transcribers, sign language interpreters, and guides to assist individuals with special needs during the evaluation process.

This is the largest number of applicants the board has ever recorded for evaluation," he stated. "We are nearly matching the number of candidates who take the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations.

He mentioned that UVTAB held regional meetings for coordinators and center supervisors on November 14 at four locations: Mbale, Kampala, Lira, and Bushenyi, in accordance with the board's rules regarding the conduct of evaluations.

Next in line are prison trainees

Mr. Oyesigye further mentioned that the board is in the process of concluding talks to begin evaluating prisoners who gain technical and vocational abilities during their incarceration.

No TVET institution will be excluded from the national evaluation or regulations set by the TVET Council," he stated. "Regarding prisons, it's just a matter of time. We have already met with them, and we aim to begin evaluating them since they are part of the TVET participants. We will take them into account during the upcoming assessment.

He added that UVTAB will soon begin carrying out evaluations every three months, rather than once a year or every two years.

Anyone who undergoes training will be evaluated and granted certification," he stated. "They will be eligible for evaluation and recognition via a training organization approved by the TVET Council.

Increasing need for vocational education

Ms. Jalia Nasaza, the Deputy Executive Secretary of UVTAB responsible for curriculum development, stated that the increasing figures indicate that Ugandans are progressively adopting skill-based programs as a route to job opportunities and self-sufficiency.

Mr. Wilfred Nahamya, the Deputy Executive Secretary responsible for evaluation, stated that the number of candidates has increased consistently throughout the year.

"During the May-June evaluation period, the board had 66,000 participants. This rose to approximately 80,000 in the August-September session, and currently more than 137,000 candidates are being evaluated in the November-December session," he stated.

As per Mr. Nahamya, participants enrolled in the Presidential Skilling Hubs and the Presidential Initiative for Educating a Girl and Boy Child are among those taking part in this round.
